It was discovered that the cement industry is one of the primary producers of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas. It causes damage to the most fertile layer of the earth, the topsoil causing soil erosion, water pollution, and flooding.
The industry is now experimenting with different substitute cementitious materials other than traditionally used OPC and PPC to help reduce carbon dioxide emission and conserve the ecological environment. This substitute cementitious materials include fly ash, GGBS, Silica, Limestone, Gypsum, Cement Kiln Dust, Pozzolans, Alkali Activated Binders and many more. Cement companies are now developing water repellent cement and cement fitting climatic and zonal guidelines of specific regions. There is also an availability of crack-less cements.
